Meaders Road Trilogy Part 2 – How To Create A Yobs Paradise Crime & Anti Social Behaviour by John Henry
An absolute tragedy is the case of Fiona Pilkington She was a caring mother of a lovely daughter Francecca who was mentally handicapped and a good son Anthony who suffered from dyslexia. This poor mother was driven to committing suicide in 2007 by burning her car with herself and daughter inside. She could not take anymore due to appalling extent of low level crime and harassment imposed on her family by moronic yobs.
Fiona Pilkington lived in Barwell, Leicestershire, in the UK and her life there was tormented by yobs. This lowlife appeared to have originated from just five families, and they imposed on Fiona a campaign of anti-social and crime including stones: thrown at house, theft, verbal and threatening abuse, children jumping into her hedges and much more. This bunch of âintellectsâ conducted what can only be a vindictive hate campaign; including perpetually mocking the disabilities of her children.
Fiona had approached the police for assistance at least 33 times, and wrote to her MP several times. Nothing constructive was done, in the end she sadly concluded that the only respite was to take her own life and the life of her daughter. Words cannot do justice to describe the scum that drove this poor mother to do this.
The inquest following the suicide heard that the gang leader proudly shouted at Fionaâs house and boasted âWe can do anything we like and you canât do anything about it.â This tragic case highlights that a multitude of âlow levelâ nuisances and crime can add up to a huge problem, to make life intolerable.
There are hundreds of such environments across the United Kingdom where low level anti-social behaviour and crime are rife and life is miserable for the law abiding individuals having to put up with this rubbish. At the time of the Fiona Pilkinton case the author lived in a peaceful road called Meaders Road in the Ryde area of the Isle of Wight, and could barely imagine what it was like to live in area where yobs rule. All that was to change in Spring 2010. As the first article of this trilogy of essays explored, an affordable housing estate Oak Vale was built adjacent the formerly quiet Meaders Road; against the wishes of residents and the advice of the police.
The walkway was opened mid April 2010, and almost instantly life changed for Meaders Road residents. The sheer quantity of people walking past was the first thing Meaders Road residents noticed. If these were monks and nuns this would be quite a life changing imposition due to the sheer quantity passing through, but many looked rough, chavvish, drinking/smoking, and swearing profusely. Some of the Vikki Pollard lookalikes had the dubious ability to simultaneously smoke a fag, swear down their mobile, and pushing their baby chav all at the some time!
Almost immediately there was a proliferation of litter, this included such adult items as beer tins (invariably strong special brew), beer bottles, broken glass, drug syringes, and to complete the âniceâ picture â used condoms. These items were deposited by the new people cutting through who just didnât care. The litter was invariably cleared by Meaders Road residents.
The rapid degradation of the area took many and immediate forms. A proliferation of dogâs mess was apparent, with the dogs depositing this invariably of the staffordshire bull Terrier/pitbull cross variety complete with spiked colour and allowed to be unleashed by their owners. These dogs together with Rottweilerâs appear to be the choice pet of âthe great unwashedâ. Even with video evidence of two rough women in their 50s walking through via the new walkway, and allowing their dogs to run amok around Meaders Road property with impunity, there was no interest from the authorities. Some of the Meaders Road residents own dogs, including a red setter and white Alsatian – great classy dogs and there was never a problem with dog mess until the new walkway was open.
The authorâs first personal experience of the yobs imposed on Meaders Road was being woken at past 2am Tuesday 20th April 2010 by loud foul mouth ranting, this emanated from a group of yobs stationery in the road barracking at another group located just past the walkway in Oakvale. It is not pleasant being woken up by aggressive toned foul mouth noise! The polite request out of my window to keep the noise down was of course met with a tirade of foul mouth abuse: You f****** w***** . This was a swift lesson that it is pointless trying to reason with foul mouthed yobs, and also that sleepless nights and foul mouth abuse will now become a feature of life. These charmers affected a lot of residents that night. A teacher said she was almost falling asleep during lessons the next day, a railway worker said he was extremely tired, a Managing Director extremely sleepy in front of staff. The irony is that most if not all these yobs will be on benefits, and were directly affecting the ability of working taxpayers to earn the money to pay for them to live – not that this feral lot would care.
There are no pavements at the end of Meaders Road; therefore the walkway introduces a huge volume of people straight onto a road. Reversing a car out of a drive, was a nightmare, the people traffic seemed largely oblivious to road users, some walking straight into a reversing car. The more dubious pedestrians took delight at walking in the middle of the road in front of cars; any show of discontent was greeted with the standard lowlife one fingered salute. Government bureaucracies can be obsessed with Health and Safety, but the new walkway arrangement would fail any sensible risk assessment. An accident is waiting to happen, on basic road safety layout criteria alone.
Everyday life became a trial. A significant number of the individuals imposed on Meaders Road were not pleasant at all, perpetually using foul language, and invariably implying or actively seeking confrontation. One of the authorâs earliest experiences was walking back home from work, on approaching Meaders Road a large group of youths aged around 14 to 16 were walking towards him. One decided to mock the author as he was wearing a tie. For the feral it doesnât matter whether you’re of ethnic origin, gay, middle class, physically or mentally handicapped etc. – if you are not lowlife you are their target.
Some of these youths were openly drinking tins of strong lager, they donât worry about being caught – it will be the poor hardworking checkout girl in Tesco accidentally serving a youth aged just under 18 who looks about 30 who would be more likely to end up being punished. All the author was doing was walking home after a hard days work, but was greeted by an unprovoked âShow Us Some F****** respectâ – charming. Why some of the people in this country least deserving of any respect, are the ones that demand it under implied threat of violence, is unfathomable. Luckily one of the group knew I was in the Royal Navy (“He was in the navy – lets f***ing leave him alone”), so this diffused a potential disastrous situation, the next person they confront may not be so lucky.
It was established from neighbours of Meaders Road that they had experienced numerous recent anti-social and crime incidents. These included: Theft of a bike, theft of garden items, theft of skateboard subsequently discovered in the new Oakvale Estate, attempted break-in to car, âladyâ seen urinating in Meaders Road, numerous incidents of males urinating in street, and the introduction of rubbish, drug syringes, broken bottles, and dog excrement including some deposited on a residentâs motorbike seat. The character of the formerly quiet Cul De Sac of Meaders Road had dramatically changed as soon as the new walkway was opened.
In the face of adversity some individuals will not take a bad situation lying down, hence Meaders Road resident Jayne Clews emerged with much gusto. As a resident she was certainly not going to take the situation lying down, she instigated and continues a remarkable campaign to fight for the walkway to close and restore a peaceful existence to Meaders Road.
Jayne started a petition, needless to say residents of all households in Meaders Road duly signed, and even a few from the new Oak Vale estate. The author walked around with Jayne and personally met some of the new Oak Vale residents, most appeared as concerned as anyone regarding anti-social behaviour and the majority appeared good people. To make absolutely clear, this article is not directed at all residents of the new estate. Indeed one of the prime problems was that the walkway became a short cut, and linked a quiet road with a crime spot area in Ryde. This was down to a minority of anti-social of individuals of all ages. The sheer volume of people imposed into road not designed for through traffic, and the volume of low level crime and anti social behaviour imposed on a formerly quiet neighbour is the issue.
Jayne got to work and kept Local councillors and the police were informed. The local media including Isle of Wight radio, Isle of Wight County Press, and IOW Gazette newspapers were used to garner publicity. In fact Meaders Road was getting rather well known within the local community, and a quick google search of âMeaders Roadâ gives many returns albeit reporting the drunks, yobs, and anti-social behaviour imposed on the road. It was clear that nothing would happen without vociferous campaigning, and this was expertly led by Jayne.
However, the anti-social incidents continued. One neighbour had two âladiesâ peer through her kitchen window, and it took little in the way of lip reading to ascertain their charming âWhat The F*** Are You Looking Atâ utterance. She had lived at her property for 15 years, and now something as simple as cooking was turned into an unpleasant experience. The author saw for himself one morning a young lad of about 5 was walking through the walkway, but stopped to kick a can â a female individual, presumably his mother boomed out âGET A MOVE ON, GET A MOVE ON OR F*** OFF! âCharming, I felt sorry for the boy, he didn’t have a chance in life.
There was precious little hope of getting good nights sleep either on a Friday, Saturday or the odd mid week day. It was a case of being continually woken up by foul mouth drunken yobs. Strategies were developed such as sleeping in a spare room at the back of the house, keeping all windows shut no matter how hot it became. However, the noise was such, it was often easiest just to give up on trying to sleep – for many Meaders Road residents sleep deprivation became the norm.
By this stage Jayne Clews illustrious campaigning was bearing results, and certainly put Meaders Road on the map. The plight of the road was featured in local newspapers, on local radio, the Isle of Wight local MP Andrew Turner visited the Road, a local councillor and police chief stayed in the road overnight. There were two arrests that night; a mattress was stolen from Jayneâs garden, and incidents of loud foul mouthed anti-social behaviour. However with the council having imposed a continuous tirade of lowlife onto Meaders Road, the predicted aftermath was greeted with a bureaucratic slug speed response. Despite consistent police and resident support for closure of the walkway and continuous crime and anti-social reports, the response was a continuous stream of meetings, each reaching the same conclusion toâ. ‘Hold yet another meeting’!
By May 2010 the extent of foul language, anti-social behaviour, drunkenness, littering, vandalism, drug use, dog mess, aggressive and threatening behaviour, was absolutely shocking, and bared no comparison to life before these people were imposed onto a quiet residential road. One single day can provide more crime and anti-social behaviour, than ten years worth prior to the walkway opening!
An obvious question to ask is what did the police do? In fact quite a lot, the local police officers which included Sgt Andy Gill, PC Mike Giddens, and PCSO Karen Allen were invariably efficient and proactive. The police presence in Meaders Road dramatically increased, and they did what they could to help. It is very easy to blame the police, but for over a decade the road never needed any police presence as there was no trouble to speak of. The dramatic increase in crime and anti-social behaviour was not down to the police; in fact they did not support the opening of the walkway. Nor did the local Ryde Town council or of course the Meaders Road residents. These views were apparently overridden by the Isle of Wight council in conjunction with South Wight Housing Association.
The police simply do not have the resources to police a single road 24 hours a day, even though the formerly quiet residential road became one of the top Isle of Wight crime hotspots. The police are also handicapped by the imposition of a box ticking target driven culture, political correctness, bureaucracy, and an overriding Criminal Prosecution Service (CPS) that appears to weigh the odds firmly in favour of criminals. It is understood that foul mouth yobs can sprout their profanities to the police without any CPS support for consequent charges. It is all very well for residents to constantly report anti-social behaviour and criminal behaviour, but in most cases the perpetrators have long disappeared by the time the police arrive. Eventually this process grinds down victims, and such calls will inevitably reduce over time. This may look good statistically, but it is not necessarily indicative of any reduction in crime.
On 21 May 2010 the author noticed that a stone rabbit was stolen from his garden. In fact in the two month period since the walkway was opened the known theft count from the twenty five households amounted to twelve â not good odds. It was immediately decided that all removable items from the front garden were locked away, together with any items such as paving stones that could be used to damage the home. Tending the garden was also abandoned due to the abuse and hostile environment created by people walking past. Other households took similar decisions, with a dramatic reduction in hanging baskets, potted plants and other niceties in the road. Some of the few stalwarts, who left garden decorations out, would go through the heartache of seeing items vandalised or stolen. This forms part of the downward spiral of a formerly nice area being taken down by the action of yobs and criminals.
Also on the 21 May, that late evening the author went out for a couple of quiet drinks, ironically spending some time with an ex Mayor and Ryde councillor. Whilst walking back home, there was three very drunk and foul mouth loud individuals that were approaching Meaders Road heading to the walkway. The author proceeded to walk towards his home. The events that followed will be covered in the Third and final part of the Meaders Road Crime trilogy which will explore victim injustices inherent in the UK system. However this will be on a more positive note and will also examine how the author experienced a recent spate of unrelated crime against him: by a vicious assault outside his home, an assault in a social setting, theft from his car, and a disgraceful assault from a former employee at his business; but managed to turn each into a positive outcome.
The focus of this essay has been on a small road on the Isle of Wight. To be fair things can be much worst on the mainland. The author on Boxing Day whilst dropping his son off at theatre work in Southwark, had his car broken into whilst parked in broad daylight on a main road. Post internet research has shown that this areaâs levels of crime far outstrip that currently experienced on the Isle of Wight. However, it is interesting to note how a formerly peaceful area can through direct government policy inspired changes can be converted to a crime trouble spot. The UK government recently took the decision to release local crime statistics on the internet at www.police.uk . This is tremendous facility; a quick check of Meaders Road, Ryde shows 16 recorded crimes and ASB in December 2010; this figure beats even the main nightspot area of Union Street (4) and the Esplanade Seafront (11) combined! The figure is even more shocking, when one considers that this located in a small Cul De Sac road of 25 owned semi-detached and detached properties. The police and residentâs fears had been realised in spades!
It is concluded that low level crime and anti-social behaviour is a significant and growing problem in the United Kingdom. The core reasons are complex and a simultaneous combination of a host of factors such as: society breakdown, soft touch non judgemental attitudes, family break down, lack of father figures, a system loaded in favour of lawbreakers, police burdened by target culture & political correctness, a bureaucratic Criminal Prosecution Service (CPS) out of sync with the police, a welfare system that supports fecklessness, an uncontrolled immigration policy over the past decade proving a honey pot to the criminally inclined. All this lot can be firmly placed at government policy over many decades, largely driven by ideology and a naivety towards human nature.
Poor law abiding Fiona Pilkington didnât have a chance to enjoy the peace she and her family deserved. As the moronic gang leader who tormented her and her family proclaimed âWe can do anything we like and you canât do anything about it.â The sad aspect is that given the current state of the UK, he was absolutely right.
